At AllClear, we can cover emergency medical expenses, if you’re travelling with a pre-existing medical condition.
Why do you need Travel Insurance for pre-existing conditions?*
The Australian Bureau of Statistics found one in two people in Australia had at least two chronic conditions. Travel insurance for pre-existing conditions is essential as it protects you from potentially high medical costs if your condition flares up or requires attention while abroad. With emergency medical expenses falling under the most common things people claim for, travelling without this cover is not a risk you should take.
Even the well-managed conditions can become more challenging in unfamiliar settings, with changes in routine, diet, climate, and activity levels, out of your routine and far from the medical support system you are familiar with. Eating different food, drinking more and doing those once in a lifetime things – whether it’s walking tours in Europe or diving in Bali – can put you at increased risk for needing medical care while overseas.
Without cover, any emergency treatment or hospitalisation could come at a significant personal cost. With Travel Insurance that includes pre-existing conditions, you can travel with peace of mind that you are covered.
Medical expenses can vary and the Insurance Council of Australia advises Australians to make sure their policy covers what they need. Their Travel Insurance Survey found most insurance policies don’t cover pre-existing conditions and 32% of survey respondents didn’t know that.
At AllClear, we’re a specialist medical travel insurance provider so you can cover the medical conditions you declare. We have a three-step simple process so you know that you can have peace of mind when you’re travelling with medical conditions.
What is a pre-existing medical condition?
If you’ve been diagnosed with any medical conditions or are taking any medication, it’s important you tell us, as failure to do so may result in your claim being declined in full or in part. But you sometimes have to tell us about conditions even if you’re not actively being treated for them right now.
We want to make sure we offer you the right cover for your trip. We’ll ask you to take a more in-depth medical screening if:
- Taken any prescribed medication or required medical treatment within the last two years.
- Been a registered in or out-patient in the last two years.
- Been placed on a waiting list currently for investigations or treatment.
- Been diagnosed by a doctor or consultant as suffering from a terminal illness.
We can cover all pre-existing medical conditions. Disclosing them means that we are be able to get you the right cover.

What our customers say
Word of mouth from friends and family is still a huge endorsement when it comes to choosing our own insurance. That’s why we’re thrilled you’ve rated us 4.7/5 on TrustPilot.
“It took me a long time to find a travel insurer for the over 80s disposed to really consider pre-existing medical conditions. I found one in AllClear Travel Insurance. Even better since I struggle sometimes with complex questionnaires on web-based systems, when I rang their helpline for some help the help was first class and I ended up with the cover I sought for what I thought was a competitive premium.”

How much is Travel Insurance for pre-existing conditions?
Premiums are based on a number of factors including the destination and length of your trip, the level of cover you selected, the number of travellers and their ages.
Who’s travelling can also affect your price. If you or someone you’re with has a pre-existing medical condition, your premium will likely be higher than a quote for someone without the condition. We always do our best to keep our quotes competitive and we can offer advice to help you keep things as cost effective as possible.
If you want to get a quote or talk about one, call us. Our friendly travel insurance experts are on-hand to answer all your questions.
Frequently asked questions about Travel Insurance for pre-existing conditions
Can you get Travel Insurance with pre-existing conditions?
Yes you can, you just have to get it from the right provider. Some providers may not cover you for expenses related to your medical condition or might exclude you altogether.
At AllClear, we cover all pre-existing conditions. We also don’t have any maximum ages for our medical cover. If you want to travel, we want to help you do it.
What happens if you don’t declare a pre-existing condition?
You must declare all pre-existing conditions. If you don’t, any claims may not be approved. Even if the claim is for a seemingly unrelated medical condition or an accident, we may refuse to cover it. The wording is in all our policy terms and conditions.
It’s important we have all the information we need to give you a correct price and level of cover.
How do you declare a pre-existing medical condition?
Our three-step process for buying Travel Insurance is quick and simple. You can buy it online or over the phone. Either way, we’ll ask about pre-existing conditions. This could be something you’re having investigated or already have diagnosed. If you’ve had tests or been to the doctor for something in the last two years, we’ll want to consider it.
When you tell us, we’ll ask you to complete a medical screening where we ask you relevant questions about your condition. We’ll then provide you with a quote.
Can you still get cover if your condition is undiagnosed?
Yes. If you’ve had any tests or investigations for symptoms, we can still cover you while you travel. We’ll take details about the symptoms that led to you having the tests. We may also want to see any paperwork regarding the outcome, even if you’ve yet to get a formal diagnosis. We’ll be as sensitive as possible and only ask questions or request documents we really need.
